Incentives Available for Solar Panels in Ontario 

The Home Renovations Savings Program (HRSP) in Ontario provides rebates for solar PV in 2026, with additional incentives if you add battery storage. If your home and planned system meets the eligibility criteria, you can receive up to $10,000 rebates for a combined solar + battery system installation.

Whether Incentives Apply to your Rooftop Solar Project

To participate in Ontario incentive programs, you can only use the electricity that the solar PV panels generate to meet your home’s energy needs.  This is called load replacement. None of the electricity is sent to the grid.

To benefit from the battery storage rebate, timing is critical. To qualify for the battery storage rebate, you’ll need to apply for and install the battery at the same time that you apply for and install solar PV panels.

Combine the incentives with extra savings through Switch Together. Switch Together and government incentives together can reduce initial costs further.

If You Decide Net Metering is your Preferred Option

You may decide that participating in net metering is your preferred option. Your home won’t be eligible for the HRSP incentives.  Net metering lets you use the electrical grid like a giant battery for your solar PV system. When your solar PV system makes too much for your household use, it goes into the grid and you get credit. For up to 12 months, you can use the credit at a different time against your household use.

In Ontario, you should first talk to your installer. There can be grid capacity issues that prevent your utility from allowing you to enroll in net metering.

Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program 

The Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP) is the Province of Ontario’s energy-efficiency program. It is administered through SaveOnEnergy and Enbridge Gas.

The HRSP provides a variety of rebates for energy efficiency upgrades. You can add rooftop solar panels to offset your energy consumption. Bundle rooftop solar with a battery energy storage system at the same time and you could get a rebate for both. No home energy assessment is needed.

Other options that don’t require a home energy assessment include heat pumps, attic insulation, smart thermostats and appliances.  

Other energy efficiency upgrades might require a home energy assessment. These include adding insulation and air sealing, replacing windows and doors, installing heat pump water heaters.   

 

How to apply for the HRSP Rebates 

Check if you’re eligible.

The basic eligibility requirements are:

As the homeowner and applicant, you are 18 years or older.

The home is connected to the Ontario electricity grid.

The residence is a single detached, semi-detached or row/townhome or a mobile home on a permanent foundation.
4
Your home is heated by electricity, natural gas, oil, propane or wood.

Choose Solar for your Electricity Consumption

As described above, you are eligible if you will you use your solar pV system for load displacement. Choose at the same time whether to add battery storage to store some of the electricity your solar panels generate.

Business Incentives 

Ontario Small Business Programs

Small Businesses also can qualify for other energy efficiency upgrades through SaveOnEnergy. In many cases, SaveOnEnergy will cover up to 50% of eligible project costs. Often the SaveOnEnergy rebates can be stacked on top of the Clean Technology ITCs.

Clean Energy Investment Tax Credits

Businesses can benefit too. Businesses can qualify for the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which provides up to a 30% tax credit for installing solar on the business’ property.
